The Clubhouse

The Clubhouse

Every third Thursday of the month, 4pm

The Clubhouse is presented by Glenn Redler, a lifelong sports fan bringing a fan’s perspective to the stories that make sport special.

The show covers sport from Exeter to the world, mixing the big national and international stories with plenty of local sport, including Exeter City, Exeter Chiefs and the teams, clubs and people making things happen across Devon. Expect interviews, previews, reviews, sporting nostalgia and stories that go beyond simply who won and who lost.

Alongside the sport is a varied mix of great music, often with a sporting connection – from terrace anthems and songs associated with famous sporting moments to tracks that simply fit the story being told.

The Clubhouse is for sports obsessives, casual fans and anyone who enjoys a good story. You don’t need to know every player, statistic or league table to join in. The aim is simple: pull up a chair, enjoy the conversation, discover something new and have a laugh along the way.

Because sport is better when it’s shared.

What brought you to Phonic FM?

My history with Phonic FM goes back to before the pandemic. I joined the station as Treasurer in October 2019, a role I held for four years until 2023, and I’ve continued to help out behind the scenes whenever needed.

Pretty much from the moment I got involved, people at the station encouraged me to have a go at presenting my own show. It took me a few years to finally take their advice, but eventually I decided it was time to stop talking about it and get behind the microphone!

The Clubhouse is the result – and I’m very glad they kept asking.

What does Phonic FM mean to you?

For me, Phonic is about community, creativity and giving people the opportunity to have a voice. It’s a wonderfully eclectic station where people are encouraged to share the things they’re passionate about, whether that’s a particular type of music, the arts, the local community or, in my case, sport.

What do you do when you’re not on Phonic FM?

By day I’m an accountant, which is probably about as far removed from presenting a sports radio show as you can get!

Away from work, sport takes up a fairly ridiculous amount of my time. Whether it’s watching football or rugby, following cricket, attempting to survive CrossFit, or heading off to a random non-league football ground, there’s usually some kind of sport involved.

I’m also a big music fan and love going to gigs, as well as getting out and exploring Devon and the South West. More recently I’ve started working on some other sports storytelling ideas too – so even when I’m not on Phonic FM, I’m rarely too far away from sport, music or a microphone.

How do radio presenters do it?

Research, preparation, timing and years of experience. Or, in my case, a love of sport and the blind optimism that everything will probably be fine. I’m currently relying on enthusiasm, extensive notes and pressing buttons until music comes out!
