On December 1st, 2022, Phonic FM extended its broadcasting area by adding a DAB+ service to its existing FM service. Broadcasting in block 9A of the spectrum, the signal now covers the whole of the Greater Exeter area in high quality stereo. It broadcasts to over 140,000 adults over 15 in the coverage area.
On 15th February 2023 the station will have been on the air for 15 years and will be marking the occasion with several celebratory events. Throughout its time on-air it has maintained a ‘no adverts – no playlist’ policy and has been largely self-funding. It’s promoted numerous musical events across a range of genres, as well as hosting theatre, poetry and spoken word events.
Musically, shows cover an enormous spectrum from blues and folk, to show tunes, jazz to rap, soul to psychedelia and shows which defy categorisation. It provides a platform for local performers and publicity for artists visiting the area.
It offers, and will continue to offer, almost open access to the airwaves, thanks to a dedicated team who offer broadcast training. Plans for 2023 include studio re-equipment, shows from new genres and the extension of the area it broadcasts to.
