A brilliant reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest work

A brilliant reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest work

Macbeth, Beer Quarry Caves, runs until May 10

By Jenna Richards

I donned a hard hat and led by three witches descended into the darkness with just a tea light to illuminate my passage. Once inside there was a distinct chill in the air and an ever present gentle drip from the ceiling made the darkness that little bit more eerie.

The witches congregated in front of an assembled crowd and cackled and prophesised about what lay ahead. Suddenly, amidst the darkness, of the walls lit up as a projector sprung to life and the story of Macbeth began to unravel…

I was at Beer Quarry Caves for a striking new adaptation of Macbeth from Four of Swords Theatre Company, who are becoming renowned for staging fabulous productions in unusual locations – and this was no exception.

Guided by the witches, whose prophecies predict and steer Macbeth’s actions and seal his fate, we were led into the darkness and the bloodshed was unleashed!

After being commended by the King and made Thane of Cawdor for his bravery in battle Macbeth (Midge Mullin), egged on by his wife, Lady Macbeth (Sarah White) seized the Scottish throne before being undone by his out-of-control ambition.

We were led through the labyrinth of caves as we followed Macbeth’s murderous journey into insanity.

With plenty of dramatic thrills this was a solid and enjoyable performance from Four of Swords and is the first time a theatrical production has been staged at the 2,000 year old site between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis.

Well with going to see.

Audiences stand and walk throughout the show so comfortable footwear and warm clothes are recommended. Hard hats are supplied.

Performances are on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from April 30 – May 10. Tickets are £10, available from www.four-of-swords.com or The Bike Shed box-office on (01392) 434169. There is a £1 fee to book over the phone.
