Cupola Bobber will take you on a journey – part exploration part search – through a universe intricately constructed from cardboard, a web of lo-fi mechanics that transform the confined theatre interior to an expansive nightscape.
Motivated by a mysterious note: ‘If I die, my knowledge may die with me’ they investigate the stars, the railroad and their own memories in search of something infinitely satisfying.
Cupola Bobber create work slowly, though a process of collaboration and research, reflection and rehearsal. The simplicity of materials used, homespun engineering and bumbling wit are offset by the delicate intricacies of the piece, often surprising an audience with sensitive humour and attention to detail that is revealed.
Their physical performance is tinged with Vaudeville, taking it close to staged theatrics, while retaining an intimacy that makes it seem beautifully familiar. This is our chance to enter their world; one that holds ours at arms length and so uncovers new ways of understanding and new methodologies of meaning.
Cupola Bobber are a duo from Chicago comprising Stephen Fiehn and Tyler Myers. They have been working together since 1999 making video, durational performances and publishing writing, as well as producing three previous pieces for the ‘formal’ theatre environment.
This show is the result of a year-long international artists residency at the Nuffield Theatre Lancashire.
