The Grunge Explanation
Grunge noun
1. informal grime; dirt. Synonyms: grime · dust · soot · smut · muck · mud · filth · mire
2. a style of rock music characterized by a raucous guitar sound and lazy vocal delivery
DJ Jim Finn is spinning the discs and comin’ atcha with what he hopes is a topical off-piste grunge show. Fortean news included… sometimes more ‘explanation’ than ‘grunge’. Listeners harken from far and wide and are invited to appreciate some interesting and obscure tracks. For the musically divergent.

What brought you to Phonic FM?
When you first move into a room in a new city. You have a bare suit case and a radio. Yet to buy any new CDs or vinyl or set up a stereo, you tune the dial. Tuning the dial late at night I found a station playing Sonic Youth and Slint. I had not heard a radio station playing bands like that since I last went through Berlin years ago. This was something rare. It turned out that two fellas I had met at a country gig had presented a news show on Phonic FM once, they gave me a couple of contacts, and I joined with an afternoon show in 2012.
What does Phonic FM mean to you?
It’s that tune of the dial. Catching that alternative perspective. Hearing a piece of fantastic music or a voice that makes a difference helps the creative and artistic base of the community evolve. Phonic FM’s cultural effectiveness stems from many vastly different people, is non-discriminatory, and has a wide range of content – but none of it is produced for fiscal gain, which gives every effort and show an amazing amount of heart.
What do you do when you’re not on Phonic FM?
Stuff I didn’t used to do, that I am doing now.
How do radio presenters do it?
With due diligence for curse words.
