The New Theatre’s autumn season has been announced.

Cygnet Company presents FEN, by Caryl Churchill, directed by Peter Ellis.

A dramatic evocation of rural life from Caryl Churchill, one of the most gifted playwrights working today. Her intelligence and wit have produced plays as diverse as Cloud 9, Soft Cops, and Top Girls, which is currently enjoying a very successful revival in the West End. Fen is the result of workshops with people in the Fen lands and tells the story of their lives. Although it is set in East Anglia, its themes of rural life have much in common with Devon.

Four actors play the resilient residents of smoke filled Coketown in Stephen Jeffreys’ entertaining and wonderfully inventive adaptation of Dickens novel.
Louisa and Tom Gradgrind are schooled to put their trust in facts, facts, facts! Taking on circus performers, stuffy businessmen, down-trodden workers, oppressed women and rural rascals, they finally reveal that even in the gloomiest of social landscapes honesty, loyalty and jolly good times are possible.
